GLOBACATE

A Global-Education effort to offer technology education to communities of less opportunity.

Advances in technology are moving at a fast pace.  I have lived in Silicon Valley for my entire life and I have seen the accelleration of new start ups, new ideas and an endless demand for talent.  Major tech companies and larger companies seem to have unlimited budgets for hiring engineers, executives and specialists.   Unfortunately this may differ with small and medium sized businesses.  Start-up company budgets are becoming tighter and stringent and to hire local talent or export talent to their locations, many start-ups see the option of outsourcing or enabling the H1B option as a feasible solution.   Hiring the quality employee via outsourcing is a more challenging task for small businesses.  While there are many agencies providing this type of assistance, on a global outreach scale, most agencies lack the ability to perform this efficiently.

The Globacate Project intends to address these issues to alleviate the excruciating challenges.  Some of the key objectives:

  • 1.  Evaluating the skills which are in demand and have a sustained future.
  • 2.  Identifying the potential talented people around the world
  • 3.  Create a more effective online screening and testing process
  • 4.  Educate and lift their skills to their maximum potential

MY OWN EXPERIENCE OUTSOURCING

I myself have been an entrepreneur experiencing many of these hiring challenges.   I have hired team members locally in software engineering, marketing and adminstrating.   Although most of the talent acquired were  quality candidates, I understand compensation is an issue  and even Angel seeded companies could easily go dry within a year or less.   This triggered to seek alternative resources.  I took the opportunity to perform research in the Philippines.

While in the Philippines I visited three agencies in search for web developers, designers and customer services coordinators.   The agencies were in Cebu and Iloilo, the central Philippines.    After a few meetings, I made my decision to submit projects to the most ideal firm.  Within weeks, I began to notice the quality of the work was quite impressive.  Communicating with the team overseas was good and the value of the work was excellent.    This was not the first time I have outsourced work.  About 10 years ago, I hired a team from a Philippine based agency to perform SEO tasks such as back-linking and social network building.   The objective was to improve our Google ranking to figure and bikini athletes.  As of today and 10 years later you can still search the name "Triya Redberg" and "Yvonne Bastian" and see two to three pages of results.  This SEO work has sustained value. Furthermore, these projects cost a mere fraction of what it would cost to hire in the U.S.
